Without the efforts and discoveries of Dr. Bert Sakmann and Dr. Erwin, it would be very hard for us to understand its existence of ion channels in human body and the importance of ionized minerals.
Calcium Does Not Work Only on Bones Formation!
They play a key role in signal transduction pathways, where they act as a second messenger, in neurotransmitter release from neurons, in contraction of all muscle cell types, and in fertilization.
Many enzymes require calcium ions as a cofactor, those of the blood-clotting cascade being notable examples. Extracellular calcium is also important for maintaining the potential difference across excitable cell membranes, as well as proper bone formation.

BONE IS CALCIUM STORAGE
Since Calcium is so important, our bone is a storage of calcium, which plays vital roles of human life, which include heart contraction, blood clotting, second and third messenger in neurotransmitter, bone formation, etc.
That’s why we have ‘Calcium Homeostasis’ for maintaining proper levels of calcium in blood. When free or ionized calcium is not enough in blood, our body system takes calcium out of our bones. It would be the main cause of Osteoporosis.
Calcium levels in mammals are tightly regulated, with bone acting as the major mineral storage site. Calcium ions, Ca2+, are released from bone into the bloodstream under controlled conditions. Calcium is transported through the bloodstream as dissolved ions or bound to proteins such as serum albumin.
Parathyroid hormone secreted by the parathyroid gland regulates the resorption of Ca2+ from bone, reabsorption in the kidney back into circulation, and increases in the activation of vitamin D3 to calcitriol. Calcitriol, the active form of vitamin D3, promotes absorption of calcium from the intestines and the mobilization of calcium ions from bone matrix.
Calcitonin secreted from the parafollicular cells of the thyroid gland also affects calcium levels by opposing parathyroid hormone; however, its physiological significance in humans is dubious.
Calcium storages are intracellular organelles, that constantly accumulate Ca2+ ions and release them during certain cellular events. Intracellular Ca2+ storages include mitochondria and the endoplasmic reticulum.
When people choose calcium supplements Vitamin D is considered as a very important ingredient for calcium absorption. In one way it’s true because Vitamin D promotes absorption of calcium from the intestines when the blood calcium levels are lower than 9mg/dL.
Vitamin D is NOT the Major Factor in Good Calcium Supplements
As you know human skin can make substantial amounts of vitamin D when sizable portion of your skin is exposed to the sun. Your body is designed to get the vitamin D it needs by producing it when your bare skin is exposed to sunlight. God gives you Vitamin D in natural way. And also there are many alerts regarding overdosing Vitamin D because it might be one of the cause of hypercalcemia.
Dr. Jonathan R. Genzen (MD, PhD, FASCP Department of Pathology, University of Utah; and Chemistry Division, ARUP Laboratories, Salt Lake City, UT) reported his research, ‘Hypercalcemic Crisis Due to Vitamin D Toxicity’ in American Society for Clinical Pathology (Laboratory Medicine, Volume 45, Issue 2, 1 May 2014, Pages 147–150).
In his article he noted that “Vitamin D toxicity can result from overuse of prescription or over-the-counter vitamin D-containing supplements, over-consumption of foods that have been fortified with vitamin D, ingestion of vitamin-D containing rodenticides, and even consumption of normally safe doses of vitamin D by individuals with a genetic predisposition to vitamin D sensitivity. For example, a recent study showed that CYP24A1 mutations play a role in vitamin D sensitivity in idiopathic infantile hypercalcemia.”
Ionization is the first Factor in Good Calcium Supplements
As we discussed before only ionized calcium (free calcium) can go through cell membranes when we choose calcium supplement the rate of ionization would be the first one to consider of.
There are 1% of free calcium in our body fluids and the name of calcium came from ‘calx or calcis’ in Latin, meaning ‘lime’. And it is isolated in 1808 by English man Sir Humphrey Davy.
Actually the 1% of free calcium is performing the most important roles in human body.
In humans the concentration of calcium is about 9-10mg/dL. But it includes all types of calcium exists in plasma or serum, which are 41% of protein-bound calcium (mostly bound to Albumin), 50% of ionized or free calcium, and 9% of complexed or chelated calcium.
Protein-bound calcium and complexed or chelated calcium is combined with organic or inorganic substances. So, to be activated they should be ionized.
Many researchers suspect these unionized calcium contents in our blood might be a big cause of hypercalcemia, which everyone worries when they take calcium, especially from supplements.
Magnesium is the second Factor in Good Calcium Supplements
Magnesium plays a role in over 300 enzymatic reactions within the body, including the metabolism of food, synthesis of fatty acids and proteins, and the transmission of nerve impulses.
Magnesium is one of seven essential macro-minerals. These are minerals that need to be consumed in relatively large amounts, at least 100 milligrams (mg) per day. An adequate intake can help prevent problems with bones, the cardiovascular system, diabetes, and other functions.
However, you might not know of magnesium’s importance in calcium supplements. Magnesium is a safe guard of calcium because it associated with muscle relaxation while calcium is connected to the muscle contraction.
Magnesium can affect muscle relaxation through direct action on cell membranes. Mg2+ ions close certain types of calcium channels, which conduct positively charged calcium ions into neurons. As a physiologic calcium antagonist, magnesium can be used for calcium channel blocker.
2:1 ratio of calcium and magnesium is the best formula for good calcium supplements.
Since calcium and magnesium is a couple minerals you should check the existence of magnesium and the ratio in your calcium supplements.
According to our discussion about ionization of calcium supplement, I’m going to proceed a dissolution test with the Nanowell Dr. G’s Amazing Ionized Cal Mag capsule product. The product contains Nano-processed calcium carbonate and gluconate, also Nano-processed magnesium carbonate and gluconate, and apple cider vinegar. The purpose of this test is to see how much this product will be diluted in water. When minerals are completely diluted in water we know that they are fully ionized, and the water will pass through electricity. Since recommended daily dose of the product is 4 capsules (600mg each), I will take out powders from the capsules and put them into a beaker with 150cc of Kirkland brand purified water. When it is ready I put the beaker on a magnetic stirrer and run for 10 minutes. There is a spinner in the beaker will help reducing the dissolving time by stirring the water and the product by using magnetic power. Now, it past about 5 minutes, as you can see the Amazing Cal Mag is almost 100% diluted. Let’s leave it for 10 minutes anyway because we probably need to test another calcium product for comparison. Same condition is very essential for the comparison test.

It’s completely diluted in water and we can assume it’s 100% ionized in water. Because of this unique character when you take this product you would not have any bloated feeling or upset stomach as taking other ordinary products.
From the previous test we got the completely diluted Nanowell Amazing Ionized Cal Mag water in the beaker. With this water I will measure Total Dissolved Solids and Electrical Conductivity with TDS and EC meter. Total dissolved solids (TDS) is a measure of the combined content of all inorganic and organic substances contained in a liquid in molecular, ionized or micro-granular (colloidal sol) suspended form. Since we only put calcium and magnesium complex in this experiment, the number of TDS will be the number of ionized calcium, magnesium, and other substances such as carbonate and gluconate which are combined with calcium and magnesium ions originally. As you can see the TDS is 2,220 ppm.
We will compare this number with others but it’s usually more than 40 times higher number than ordinary calcium products. The number show that it is highly bio-available product.
At this time, we’re going to measure electrical conductivity of this amazing water in the beaker. Electrical Conductivity of a substance is defined as ‘the ability or power to conduct or transmit electricity’. Its units are Siemens per meter or micro-Siemens per centi-meter.
The reason of measuring EC is to see how much ability of conducting electricity this water has. Now, the Electrical Conductivity is 4,244 micro-Siemens/cm. We also will compare it with other products but it is also over 40 times higher than regular calcium products. With these numbers we are absolutely confident with this amazing product for high absorption availability.
Though three experiments previously we found that Nanowell Amazing Ionized Calcium and Magnesium Complex product is 100% diluted and ionized in water. And it would be one of the highest absorption rates available product on the market, today.
Our final exam is the bulb demonstration. As we measured TDS and EC numbers, this Nanowell Amazing Cal Mag water has high numbers of ion contents and electrical conductivity. It means this water can pass through electricity. When the TDS number is higher than 800 ppm we can see the bulb starts to be lightening. Because this water has 2,120 ppm of ionized mineral contents and 4,244 micro-Siemens/cm of electrical conductivity it should pass through electricity and the bulb should be glowing brightly.
Let’s try and see if it’s glowing brightly or not.

And when we check the ingredients the calcium and magnesium ration is 2:1, which is very good.
Final assessment of the product, we can say Nanowell Amazing Ionized Cal Mag is very unique and extraordinary calcium and magnesium supplement, which is highly bio-available and well balanced with magnesium for safety.
Now we have to test an ordinary calcium product and see what they look like when we run the same tests. For this test I will use ‘Super Bone Care Minerals,’ which contains calcium, magnesium, and zinc. I will make 3 tablets in powder with a coffee bean grinder to make same conditions. For the dissolution test I will put the powder in 150cc Kirkland brand purified water and stirring it for 10 minutes using a magnetic stirrer.
After 10 minutes we find out it is almost not dissolved in water. And TDS is only 56 ppm and EC is 110 micro-Siemens per centimeter. If we calibrate the numbers they would be half of them. Because the purified water itself has 27 ppm of TDS and 60 micro-Siemens/cm, so they will be only 22 ppm and 60 micro-Siemens/cm. I think we don’t need to do the bulb demonstration but let’s do it. As expected it does not pass through electricity.
The conclusion is that this product is hard to be ionized. But good thing is it has magnesium and zinc in it. Because calcium and magnesium is a couple minerals we can give a little credit for this product.
If you want to test your own calcium supplement but you don’t have those equipment and testers. What can you do? I recommend you run the dissolution test, at least. As I explained, and you already know that if your calcium supplement is completed diluted in water we can assume that it is completely ionized in water.
Let’s begin the test.
Just take daily dose of your calcium and make it in powder. After that put the powder into bottled water. The amount of water would be 150cc to 200cc. Tap water, purified water, spring water… any water would be okay for the dissolution test. For 10 minutes shake it several times for better dissolution. If you want to do for longer time you may leave it as much as you want, like an hour or 6 hours. I would say if yours would not be diluted in 10 minutes it would be very hard to get better results even run for 6 hours. To evaluate your calcium please see the label of the product if there is magnesium and what is the ratio between calcium and magnesium. 2:1 ratio is known as best. And for Vitamin D existence I would say it is not that important when you choosing calcium supplements.
When you choosing calcium supplement, DON’T FORGET TWO VERY IMPORTANT FACTORS!
Number is ionization and the second is magnesium existence and the ratio.
